About the Role
We’re looking for a Principal Data Scientist to lead the development of AI-powered products that transform how students and educators experience learning. You’ll work at the intersection of generative AI, personalization, and educational content, building systems that adapt to individual learners at scale. This is a high-visibility, hands-on role where your work directly shapes product direction and student outcomes.
What You’ll Do
- Design and build AI/ML systems for personalization and content generation across education products
- Architect end-to-end machine learning pipelines, from data ingestion to model deployment and monitoring
- Lead the implementation of GenAI solutions, ensuring responsible use through AI guardrails and safety frameworks
- Partner cross-functionally with product, engineering, and curriculum teams to translate learning science needs into scalable AI solutions
- Drive MLOps best practices including CI/CD for models, experiment tracking, and production monitoring
- Mentor and technically guide junior data scientists and ML engineers across the org
What We’re Looking For
- PhD in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or another quantitative field
- 5+ years of professional data science experience outside of a PhD program
- Strong hands-on Python and SQL skills – you’re comfortable writing production-grade code
- Experience with Databricks (or equivalent distributed compute platforms) and AWS (or comparable cloud infrastructure)
- Demonstrated experience with generative AI, ideally applied to personalization or recommendation problems
- Familiarity with AI guardrail frameworks and responsible AI practices
- Solid MLOps experience: model versioning, deployment pipelines, monitoring, and retraining workflows
- Strong system design ability – you can architect solutions that scale and communicate those designs clearly to stakeholders
Nice to Have

The Role and Deliverables
- Own the day to day operation of the Databricks platform and associated MLOps services, ensuring availability, performance and stability.
- Establish and run service management processes including incident, problem and change management, with clear documentation and escalation paths.
- Define and deliver standardised MLOps patterns covering model development, deployment, monitoring and lifecycle governance.
- Lead platform releases and upgrades, including planning, testing and communication to stakeholders.
- Implement and maintain security, risk and compliance controls across data and machine learning workloads.
- Manage platform roadmap, cost optimisation and supplier relationships to maximise value and developer experience.
Your Skills and Experience
- Strong experience operating Databricks in production, including workspace administration, cluster policies, jobs and data governance controls.

The Role
- Own the end to end delivery of an automated reporting and calculation platform, from design through to production.
- Automate the ingestion of data from a wide range of structured and unstructured sources including APIs, files and external partners.
- Design and implement robust data workflows and SQL based data structures to support complex financial calculations.
- Build reliable, auditable systems that significantly reduce manual intervention in NAV and LAV processes.
- Work closely with the Head of Data Science, the founder and technical and non technical stakeholders across the business.
- Lay the foundations for future AI and agent based automation as the platform evolves.
Your Skills and Experience
- Strong commercial experience building production grade systems using Python and SQL.
- Excellent problem solving skills with a logical and mathematical mindset.
- Experience integrating multiple data sources and APIs into cohesive workflows.
- Exposure to CI/CD, version control and modern engineering best practice.
- Confidence owning ambiguous, high impact projects end to end.
- Any exposure to financial services, automation of legacy processes, FastAPI or AI driven systems is a bonus but not essential.
