Backed by significant venture funding, they partner with large employers and insurers to improve access to high quality care across the US.
The Role
As a Senior AI Scientist, you will play a key role in shaping research direction and translating innovation into production systems.
- Design and develop deep learning models applied to medical images and clinical text
- Lead end to end research projects from idea generation through evaluation and deployment
- Collaborate closely with AI researchers, ML engineers, data scientists and clinical experts
- Drive innovation through experimentation, publication and conference representation
- Contribute to technical decision making at the boundary of AI research and clinical products
Your Skills and Experience
- Strong commercial or academic experience in deep learning using Python and PyTorch
- Proven ability to lead and own research projects independently
- Hands on experience training models at scale, including GPU or cluster based workflows
- Comfort working in Linux or Ubuntu environments
- Experience with AI operations or engineering practices such as Docker and model deployment
- Exposure to healthcare or medical imaging AI is highly beneficial
- A publication record in applied AI or medical AI is advantageous

THE COMPANY
Harnham is partnering with a well-funded biotech startup that is developing an AI-driven approach to more personalized cancer monitoring-integrating proprietary methods, diverse datasets, and evolving diagnostic capabilities to support ongoing care for individuals with elevated risk. The team brings experience across genomics and health data modeling, applying these foundations toward new screening and recommendation approaches, with a focus on translating research into practical clinical applications.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Research Strategy & State of the Art – Stay current with advances in AI, genomics, and oncology, identifying high-impact opportunities and shaping the research roadmap.
- Model Development – Design, train, and evaluate ML models for biomarker detection, risk stratification, longitudinal monitoring, and decision-support systems for screening and survivorship.
- Publications & Scientific Communication – Contribute to peer-reviewed publications, conference papers, and technical reports; engage with academic and research communities.
- Research to Production – Collaborate with engineering teams to bring research into production, including adapting foundation models and integrating multi-modal approaches into clinical workflows.
- Evaluation & Rigor – Develop robust experimental frameworks and validation protocols to ensure scientific integrity and clinical reliability.
- Collaboration – Work cross-functionally with clinicians, researchers, product managers, and engineers to align research initiatives with clinical and product priorities.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- PhD in machine learning, computational biology, bioinformatics, or a related field
- Strong publication record in applied AI and/or AI in healthcare or biology
- Hands-on experience building and evaluating ML models; proficiency in Python and frameworks like PyTorch, JAX, or TensorFlow
- Familiarity with cloud-based accelerators (GPU/TPU) and modern ML pipelines
- Solid software engineering practices (version control, testing, code review)
- Clear scientific communication skills across technical and clinical audiences
- Experience with biomedical data (e.g., genomics, pathology, EHRs)
- Track record of translating research into real-world impact
- Startup or entrepreneurial experience, especially building systems from zero to one

Research Scientist Human Attention and Spatial AI
London – Remote – x2 a month visits
The Role
You will design and build models that predict, interpret, and simulate human attention and behaviour in visual and spatial contexts. Working closely with the founders, you will influence both the technical roadmap and future diversification into new application areas.
Key responsibilities include:
- Developing machine learning and computer vision models focused on human attention, perception, and intent
- Designing and running experiments independently across visual and spatial data
- Working with multimodal and temporal data such as gaze, motion, and interaction signals
- Contributing to new research directions and exploratory projects beyond the initial domain
- Publishing research in leading academic venues while working on applied problems
Your Skills and Experience
- PhD or near completed PhD, or equivalent research experience, in computer vision, machine learning, neuroscience, cognitive science, robotics, HCI, or a related field
- Strong publication record, ideally at venues such as CVPR or ICCV, or equivalent research output
- Hands on experience with Python and deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow
- Ability to design, run, and analyse machine learning experiments end to end
- Clear interest in human behaviour, perception, attention, or cognitive modelling
- Comfortable working in a very small team with ambiguity and open ended research problems
Useful or Nice to Have
- Gaze modelling, eye tracking, visual saliency, or attention modelling
- Spatial AI, 2D or 3D vision, simulation, or digital twins
- EEG or other physiological signals combined with computer vision
