AI Architect (Contract)
Harnham, the leading recruitment specialist in Data & AI, is currently partnering with a well-established financial technology business with a strong focus on data, analytics, and product innovation. The organization is investing in next-generation AI-enabled decision-making and is seeking an expert consultant to help define and build the architecture that will support this vision.
- Role: AI Architect
- Location: remote, anywhere in the US
- Pay: $70-80 per hour
- Length: Extendable 6-month initial contract
- Utilization: 40 hours/week
- Benefits: W2 employees are eligible for health, dental, vision, and 401(k) benefits.
As an AI Architect, you will play a key role in shaping the foundations of AI-powered analytics within a data-driven organization. You will work closely with internal data and engineering teams to design a scalable AI context layer, build a proof of concept, and establish the evaluation frameworks required to deliver trusted, high-quality AI-generated insights.
Key Responsibilities
- Design a target-state architecture for an AI context and semantic layer.
- Create a working proof of concept alongside internal data and engineering stakeholders.
- Define how governed business context, metadata, and metric definitions should be authored, maintained, and version controlled.
- Develop an evaluation framework that measures the quality, reliability, and accuracy of AI-generated answers.
- Advise on integrating AI assistants with enterprise data and contextual knowledge sources.
- Establish approaches for monitoring performance, detecting drift, and continuously improving answer quality.
- Help create a scalable, maintainable solution that supports future AI and analytics initiatives.
- Produce documentation and recommendations that enable successful handover and long-term adoption.
Requirements
- Strong commercial experience designing semantic layers, metrics layers, or governed data platforms.
- Expertise working with modern cloud data environments and analytics architectures.
- Experience building AI, LLM, agentic AI, MCP, or retrieval-based solutions that interact with structured business data.
- Strong knowledge of dbt and data transformation best practices.
- Experience defining evaluation methodologies for AI systems and measuring answer accuracy.
- Ability to communicate architectural concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience delivering proof of concepts, frameworks, or platform designs in collaborative environments.
- Familiarity with technologies such as Snowflake, modern ELT tooling, analytics platforms, and AI assistants.

The Role
You will work closely with data and engineering teams to design the architectural foundations for AI-powered analytics. This role combines strategy and hands-on delivery, including building a proof of concept and defining frameworks that ensure trusted, high-quality AI outputs.
Key Responsibilities
- Design an AI context and semantic layer architecture
- Build a proof of concept with internal stakeholders
- Define governance for business metadata, metrics, and contextual data

The organisation manages large-scale international operations and is now entering a key phase of digital and AI-led transformation. This role will play a critical part in shaping that journey.
The Role and Deliverables
- Assess the current AI, data, and technology landscape to establish a clear baseline
- Define and deliver an enterprise-wide AI strategy aligned to business objectives
- Identify and prioritise high-value AI use cases across multiple business functions
- Advise senior stakeholders on AI opportunities, risks, governance, and best practices
- Deliver pilot initiatives and proof-of-concepts to demonstrate impact
- Establish the frameworks, policies, and operating model required for responsible AI adoption
Your Skills & Experience
- Proven experience leading AI, data, or digital transformation initiatives in complex environments
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to work closely with executive leadership
- Knowledge of AI technologies including generative AI, automation, and data platforms
- Experience defining AI strategy, governance, and implementation roadmaps
- Ability to translate technical concepts into clear, commercially focused outcomes
- Experience in sectors such as logistics, transportation, or other operationally intensive industries is advantageous
