Contract Data Scientist – Forecasting, Deep Learning, Causal AI (Retail)
£600-700/day | 4 Months | Start ASAP | Inside IR35
RAPP is looking for a technically sharp, hands-on Data Scientist to join their agile consulting team supporting high-profile retail clients. This is a 4-month contract with the chance to work on impactful forecasting and causal AI projects within a fast-moving, agency-style environment.
What You’ll Be Doing:

Designing and building custom forecasting models (XGBoost, deep learning, RL) for real-world retail scenarios

Applying causal and graph-based methods to understand and optimise customer behaviour
-
Working across the full stack of data science, from data wrangling to deployment
-
Operating within a modern MLOps setup (Docker, CI/CD, AWS)
-
Contributing to product-facing tooling (bonus if you’ve used JavaScript / Next.js / TypeScript)
What We’re Looking For:

Strong practical knowledge of deep learning fundamentals – ideally with PyTorch

Experience building bespoke models for time series, tabular, image, or text data

Hands-on forecasting experience with retail or consumer datasets

Skilled in causal inference, graph AI, or reinforcement learning

ABOUT THE COMPANY
We are partnered with a high-growth company at the intersection of AI, legal tech, and financial services, fundamentally transforming how regulated industries leverage language models and machine learning. This organization is building sophisticated NLP/LLM systems to streamline complex workflows for legal and financial professionals.
With executive-level support and increasing product demand, they’re seeking a Director of Machine Learning to lead strategy, research, and engineering execution across NLP and LLM initiatives. This is a rare opportunity to drive technical vision, shape an elite ML team, and build impactful AI systems from the ground up in a regulated space.
THE ROLE
As Director of Machine Learning, you’ll be responsible for setting the long-term machine learning roadmap, leading technical teams, and ensuring the successful development and deployment of scalable NLP solutions. You will report directly to the Head of AI and work closely with executive leadership, product, and engineering.
Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership: Define the ML vision and roadmap for NLP and LLM-based solutions, aligned with company goals and customer needs.

Team Building & Management: Hire, mentor, and manage a team of ML engineers and applied scientists. Foster a high-performing, collaborative environment.

Technical Oversight: Guide end-to-end model development-from research and prototyping through production deployment, performance monitoring, and continuous optimization.

Cross-Functional Influence: Collaborate with product, legal, engineering, and design teams to translate business needs into scalable AI solutions.

Innovation: Stay ahead of the curve in LLM research and NLP advancements. Evaluate and implement new technologies and tools to maintain technical edge.

Thought Leadership: Represent the company in industry discussions, conferences, and partner conversations. Champion best practices in ethical and responsible AI.

Operational Excellence: Ensure strong MLOps foundations are in place, including CI/CD, data governance, model monitoring, and security practices.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Required Qualifications:

10+ years of experience in machine learning and software engineering, with at least 4+ years in a leadership or managerial role.

Demonstrated success building and leading teams that develop and deploy NLP/LLM models at scale.

Deep expertise in Python, ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow), and modern NLP tools (e.g., Hugging Face Transformers, spaCy).

Experience designing and implementing ML systems in production, especially with large language models (e.g., GPT, BERT, T5).

Proven ability to align technical initiatives with business goals, working cross-functionally with product and exec teams.

Strong understanding of cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and scalable ML pipelines.

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field; PhD preferred.

Publication or open-source contributions in NLP/ML domains (e.g., ACL, NeurIPS, ICLR, EMNLP) a plus.

As they continue to expand their AI capabilities, they’re seeking a Machine Learning Engineer (Mid-Level) to join their growing NLP/LLM team.
This is a great opportunity for someone with solid production-level ML experience who wants to take the next step-working closely with seasoned researchers, engineers, and product leaders to build next-generation AI systems in a high-impact domain.
THE ROLE
As a Machine Learning Engineer, you’ll contribute to the development, deployment, and optimization of NLP models and AI infrastructure. You’ll be responsible for translating cutting-edge research into scalable, production-ready systems and collaborating with teams across engineering, research, and product.
Key Responsibilities:
- Model Development & Integration: Work with senior engineers and researchers to develop and integrate LLMs and NLP models into customer-facing products.
- Production-Ready Code: Build and maintain model pipelines that are scalable, testable, and efficient.
- Data Engineering: Help design and manage data pipelines, labeling workflows, and model training datasets.

We’re looking for a motivated engineer with a strong foundation in machine learning and an eagerness to grow within a fast-moving team.
Required Qualifications:
- 3-5 years of professional experience building and deploying ML models (with at least 2 years focused on NLP).
- Proficient in Python and familiar with ML libraries like TensorFlow, PyTorch, spaCy, or Hugging Face Transformers.
- Experience with model training, evaluation, and deployment in cloud environments (e.g., AWS, GCP, or Azure).
- Comfortable working with large datasets, data preprocessing, and version control tools (e.g., Git, DVC).
