THE ROLE
As Director of AI, you’ll set the strategy and lead a growing team of data scientists and engineers to deliver real-world AI solutions that enhance how students learn and teachers teach.
Key responsibilities include:
- Defining and executing the company’s GenAI strategy for higher education products
- Leading development of AI-powered tools for personalized learning and content generation

Job Title: Director of AI Transformation, Higher Education
Location: Fully Remote (U.S. based)
Comp: Up to $265,000 base + 15% annual bonus
Role & Company Overview
We’re working with a leading name in educational technology, serving millions of learners across K-12 and higher education. This role sits within the Data Enterprise Group and reports directly to the Chief AI Officer.
As the Director of AI Transformation, you’ll lead the company’s higher education AI strategy-developing and scaling intelligent systems that power personalized learning, adaptive content, and data-driven student outcomes.
This is a high-impact leadership role balancing strategy, technical direction, and collaboration-ideal for someone who loves both leading teams and shaping what applied AI looks like at enterprise scale.
Responsibilities
- Lead and grow a team building and deploying AI solutions for higher education customers.
- Drive the roadmap for AI applications spanning content summarization, adaptive learning, recommendations, and metadata-driven personalization.
- Provide technical guidance in areas like LLMs, data architecture, and ML Ops while ensuring models are scalable, responsible, and production-ready.
- Collaborate with engineering, product, and data teams to align AI initiatives with business goals.

Requirements
- PhD in Applied Math, Statistics, Physics, Data Science, Machine Learning, or a related field.

- Deep understanding of ModelOps, data architecture, evaluation, and orchestration frameworks.
- Proven leadership of technical teams and success scaling high-performing AI orgs.

Looking for a role where you can truly influence how data engineering is done-while still getting stuck into the tech yourself?
THE COMPANY:
I’m working with a central data function in the financial services industry that’s undergoing a full modernisation of their data platform. They’ve got technically advanced teams across the wider business and are now building out a core engineering team to unify, elevate and support that community.
THE ROLE:
It’s a strategic, hands-on role where you’ll work closely with DevOps, Product, and business partners to unlock the value of data through modern, secure and governed pipelines.
- Lead hands-on development work using Azure, Databricks, and Terraform (IaC)
- Support the migration from legacy platforms to a more modern cloud stack
- Act as a mentor and technical guide to the wider engineering team
- Implement data governance requirements
- Collaborate with non-technical stakeholders to ensure delivery aligns to business needs
- Stay close to the ML lifecycle
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
A successful Principal Data Engineer will have the following skills and experience:
- Strong hands-on experience with Azure

About the Role
This is a player/coach position, focusing on model deployment-ideal for someone with a strong foundation in software engineering and a passion for making machine learning work in the real world. You’ll lead a team of MLOps engineers on experiments, iterate on PoCs, and help define how ML models are deployed, scaled, and maintained in production environments.
What You’ll Bring
- 7+ years of software engineering experience in production environments
- 2+ years of team management experience working with ML systems (Python)
- Experience with ModelOps / MLOps workflows
- Background in:
- NLP: Named Entity Recognition / NER, information extraction, and information retrieval
- Numpy, Pandas, and scalable data handling
- Cloud environments (provider-agnostic)
- CI/CD pipelines, GitFlow, and Agile development
- Logging, alerting, testing, and autoscaling systems
- Strong collaboration and communication skills, including experience working with non-technical stakeholders
- Independent problem-solver with a proactive mindset
Preferred Experience
- Technical leadership on ML products
- Experience delivering LLM-based solutions
- Engineering management experience, including mentoring or leading cross-functional teams
- Familiarity with all stages of the AI product lifecycle
- Startup or fast-paced innovation environment experience
- People management of teams greater than 3
