Hiring Advice

AI hiring in the Netherlands has moved quickly over the past year. Large corporates are running broad AI programmes, companies whose core business is threatened by AI are rebuilding their products, and the talent pool is growing fast. Demand is still higher than supply.

This article covers what we’re seeing in the market, what the LinkedIn data shows and AI engineer salaries in the Netherlands for 2026. It also includes data scientists, machine learning engineers, and heads of AI.

 Key takeaways

  • There are 1,523 AI and genAI engineers in the Netherlands, up 37% in a year.
  • 43% changed jobs in the last 12 months, and median tenure is 0.9 years.
  • Mid-level AI engineers typically earn €70k–90k; Lead roles earn €110k–125k.
  • 66% of Dutch businesses with 250+ staff used AI in 2025, up from 42% in 2023.
  • Dutch speakers and cross-trained Data Scientists command a premium.

How many AI Engineers are there in the Netherlands?

There are 1,523 AI and genAI engineers in the Netherlands, up 37% in a year. Hiring demand is still rated ‘very high’, with 132 live job posts.

They also move jobs quickly. 43% changed jobs in the last 12 months, and the median tenure is just 0.9 years. For employers, keeping AI Engineers matters as much as hiring them.

Most of the talent is in Amsterdam (705 AI Engineers), followed by Utrecht, Rotterdam and The Hague. The Hague (+59%) and Leiden (+67%) are growing fastest. Brabant, Groningen and Arnhem-Nijmegen have a good supply of Data Science and ML talent relative to demand.

Who is hiring AI engineers in the Netherlands?

Large corporates are behind much of the AI hiring we’re seeing. Retailers, banks, telcos and government bodies all have broad AI programmes underway, mostly focused on automation and adding AI features to digital products.

Consultancies are adding to this demand by hiring people to place in these businesses. Rabobank, ABN AMRO, ING, Booking.com and Nationale-Nederlanden are among the largest employers of AI talent.

The wider data supports this. 66% of Dutch businesses with 250 or more staff used AI in 2025, up from 42% in 2023. Across all businesses with 10 or more staff, adoption was 33%, against an EU average of 20%.

We’re also seeing heavy investment in industries where AI threatens the core business, including legal, SaaS and EdTech. These companies are building new teams to rework their products.

In tech-forward businesses, AI features are already built into the product. The biggest impact there is now internal: automating development workflows and other data tasks, with self-serve analytics a popular use case.

Companies with low data maturity are finding it harder. Data quality problems are holding back delivery, and many are struggling to show results.

Where does AI talent in the Netherlands come from?

Hires typically come from three pools:

Graduates and early-career professionals who have worked on AI during their studies or internships.

Data Scientists who have cross-trained: they command a premium because they can build both ML and genAI solutions, and an ML approach is often cheaper to run than one that relies on token-based models. Nearly half (860+) of the data scientists and ML engineers in the Netherlands with genAI skills are open to new opportunities.

Software Engineers building AI features into products: they also command a premium because they add value quickly, especially for SaaS firms under pressure from proprietary AI companies.

Most hiring is at individual contributor level. There are few dedicated AI leadership roles, and in most cases existing data leaders are adding AI to their remit.

Dutch speakers command a premium. They are harder to find and highly sought after by consultancies, Dutch-speaking organisations and government bodies, as well as the wider market.

What we aren’t seeing

There is some foundation-model work in the Netherlands, but it’s limited compared with the US and the UK, and much of it comes from US firms with local teams. There’s also no clear best practice yet for what works or how to measure success, and the pace of change will make one hard to settle on.
