Applied AI Researcher (Generative AI & Dataset Strategy)
$300,000-$500,000
Overview
A rapidly growing technology organisation is seeking an Applied AI Researcher to bridge the gap between cutting-edge generative AI research and large-scale data development. The successful candidate will assess the strengths and weaknesses of state-of-the-art image and video generation models and determine how targeted datasets can be designed to improve model performance.
This role is ideal for a researcher with hands-on experience building or working with generative AI systems who also understands the critical relationship between training data quality, composition, and model outcomes. While the position is not responsible for training production models, it plays a key role in defining the data needed to advance them.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate emerging generative AI models, research publications, technical reports, and new architectural approaches.
- Identify performance limitations in image and video generation systems and determine the data needed to address those shortcomings.
- Design dataset strategies, including structure, taxonomy, metadata standards, annotation requirements, and quality controls.
- Translate research insights into actionable specifications for product and data teams.
- Partner with commercial stakeholders to understand market demands and customer requirements.
- Collaborate with technical researchers and external AI partners on data-related initiatives.
- Support dataset development efforts from concept through delivery, including operational planning and execution.
- Balance strategic research activities with practical dataset design and implementation work.
Required Qualifications
- 2+ years of relevant experience in machine learning, computer vision, generative AI, or related fields.
- Hands-on experience developing, training, evaluating, or contributing to generative AI or foundation models.
- Strong understanding of how dataset composition and quality impact model performance.
- Direct experience with image-generation technologies; exposure to video-generation systems is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of model evaluation methodologies, error analysis, and dataset design principles.
- Ability to read and interpret research papers and convert findings into practical solutions.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Experience working across research, product, and business functions.
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD in Computer Science, Computer Vision, Machine Learning, or a closely related discipline.
- Experience within organisations developing advanced generative AI systems.
- Background in visual AI domains such as image generation, video generation, synthetic data, or multimodal systems.
- Applied research experience with a track record of delivering business-impacting outcomes rather than solely academic publications.
Ideal Candidate Profile
Candidates may come from:
- Generative AI research teams focused on visual content generation.
- Applied research or research engineering environments working directly with foundation models.
- Computer vision organisations developing production AI systems.
- Academic research backgrounds with demonstrated experience translating research into real-world applications.
