Director of Ontology & Knowledge Products
Location: United States
Work Arrangement: Fully Remote, with occasional travel to Dallas, TX
Base Salary: Targeting $265,000, plus a 20% annual bonus
Work Authorization: Not specified
About the Company
We are partnering with one of the largest nonprofit healthcare organizations in the United States, supporting millions of patients across an extensive network of hospitals, care facilities, and clinical services.
The organization is making significant investments in enterprise data, artificial intelligence, and digital transformation. A major priority is moving beyond traditional analytics and reporting toward intelligent systems that can understand, connect, and reason across complex enterprise information.
To support this vision, the organization is establishing a new enterprise ontology and knowledge products function that will serve as a foundational component of its long-term AI strategy.
About the Role
We are seeking a Director of Ontology & Knowledge Products to build and lead a new enterprise ontology capability from the ground up.
This is a true 0→1 leadership opportunity. Rather than inheriting an established function, you will define the semantic architecture, technical standards, product strategy, governance framework, and operating model that will shape how enterprise knowledge is structured and used.
The primary objective is to establish a consistent, governed understanding of enterprise entities, relationships, and business concepts across clinical, operational, financial, and consumer data domains.
This semantic foundation will ultimately enable knowledge graphs, AI-powered applications, intelligent retrieval, and increasingly autonomous AI workflows.
Reporting to a VP-level data and knowledge leader, you will initially operate as a hands-on technical leader while building a function expected to grow to approximately 5-6 full-time employees.
The ideal candidate combines deep ontology and semantic architecture expertise with enterprise product ownership and experience building new capabilities.
What You’ll Do
-
Build the Enterprise Ontology: Establish the organization’s ontology and semantic architecture, defining entities, relationships, attributes, business rules, and shared definitions across enterprise domains.
-
Own Product Strategy: Develop the ontology and knowledge products roadmap, prioritizing capabilities based on business needs, enterprise data initiatives, and AI use cases.
-
Lead Semantic Architecture: Define modeling standards, cross-domain mappings, and reusable semantic structures that support knowledge graphs, analytics, retrieval, and AI applications.
-
Establish Governance: Own ontology lifecycle management, including design, implementation, validation, versioning, change management, documentation, and ongoing improvement.
-
Enable AI-Ready Data: Partner with AI and data engineering teams to ensure enterprise information is structured and governed for reliable retrieval, reasoning, and intelligent applications.
-
Drive Enterprise Adoption: Collaborate with data product owners, architects, governance teams, and business stakeholders to integrate semantic models into enterprise data products and workflows.
-
Build the Function: Establish the operating model, processes, standards, and future team structure for the Ontology & Knowledge Products organization.
-
Provide Technical Leadership: Remain directly involved in ontology design and architectural decisions while guiding cross-functional teams and communicating priorities to senior leadership.
What We’re Looking For
Enterprise Ontology & Semantic Architecture
-
Significant experience designing, building, or scaling enterprise ontology, semantic modeling, knowledge graph, or closely related enterprise knowledge capabilities.
-
Deep understanding of entity and relationship modeling, taxonomies, metadata, semantic definitions, business rules, and cross-domain mappings.
-
Experience establishing semantic standards and resolving inconsistent definitions across complex enterprise data environments.
-
Familiarity with graph databases, semantic layers, data catalogs, and modern enterprise data platforms.
Technical Product Ownership
-
Experience treating ontology and knowledge assets as reusable enterprise products, including roadmaps, governance, lifecycle management, adoption, and continuous improvement.
-
Demonstrated ownership of ontology or semantic capabilities from initial design through implementation, operationalization, and enterprise adoption.
-
Ability to work directly with ontologists, knowledge engineers, data architects, data modelers, and engineering teams on technical design decisions.
AI & Enterprise Data Integration
-
Understanding of how semantic architecture supports AI-ready data, knowledge graphs, intelligent retrieval, and enterprise AI applications.
-
Experience connecting ontology, metadata, and knowledge capabilities with enterprise data platforms and downstream analytics or digital products.
Leadership & Experience
-
Approximately 14-18 years of experience across ontology, enterprise data, semantic modeling, information architecture, knowledge management, data products, or related disciplines.
-
Approximately 8-12 years of relevant experience involving ontology, semantic layers, knowledge graphs, taxonomy, metadata, or closely related capabilities.
-
Approximately 5-8+ years of leadership experience across technical teams, enterprise programs, or major data and knowledge initiatives.
-
Experience building or significantly expanding new technical capabilities rather than solely maintaining established functions.
-
Ability to balance strategic leadership with hands-on technical involvement.
Nice to Have
-
Experience within healthcare, life sciences, financial services, or other complex, regulated industries.
-
Familiarity with healthcare data domains, including patients, providers, clinical encounters, claims, billing, and operational information.
-
Experience applying ontology or knowledge graphs to Generative AI, LLM applications, agentic AI, or autonomous workflows.
-
Exposure to retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), semantic search, embeddings, vectorization, and governed AI context.
-
Experience developing ontology or semantic capabilities within large enterprise consulting engagements.
-
Experience establishing a centralized ontology or knowledge management function from scratch.
Why This Role?
Build Something From the Ground Up
This is a newly created position with the opportunity to establish an enterprise capability that does not currently exist. You will have meaningful ownership over the architecture, strategy, standards, and organizational structure.
Direct Impact on Enterprise AI Strategy
The organization is working toward an increasingly agentic data environment over the next several years. Your work will establish the semantic foundation required for AI systems to reliably understand and reason across enterprise information.
Significant Technical Ownership
This is not a purely managerial position. You will remain directly involved in ontology design, semantic architecture, and technical decision-making while building the team around you.
Enterprise Scale and Complexity
You will work across clinical, financial, operational, and consumer data domains within a large healthcare environment, addressing complex challenges involving shared definitions, relationships, governance, and enterprise-wide adoption.
Executive Visibility and Long-Term Investment
Reporting directly to senior data leadership, you will help shape a foundational component of the organization’s broader data and AI strategy, with plans to grow the function to approximately 5-6 employees.
Location & Schedule
This position is fully remote within the United States, with very occasional travel to Dallas, Texas.
The role offers the opportunity to lead a significant enterprise initiative while working remotely and collaborating with teams across data engineering, architecture, AI, governance, and business operations.
