Senior Backend Engineer
Los Angeles or San Francisco, CA (Hybrid) | Full-Time | Confidential Client
The Opportunity
We're partnering exclusively with a pre-IPO AI technology unicorn approaching its Series D. The company builds AI-powered consumer experiences at massive scale, sitting at the intersection of real-time AI inference, interactive media, and high-throughput compute. With a clear pathway to widespread consumer adoption, this is a rare opportunity to join a high-caliber engineering team ahead of a significant liquidity event.
About the Role
The team is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer who can operate across two distinct but complementary challenges. The first is building the reliable service layer that powers the product with clean APIs, authentication, microservices, and data models. The second is engineering the high-compute orchestration layer that drives AI-generated output at scale: coordinating complex multi-stage inference pipelines, managing GPU resources, and moving large model artifacts efficiently. Strong CS fundamentals, deep concurrency experience, and the ability to own work from design to deployment are essential. This is a hybrid role based in Los Angeles.
What You'll Be Doing
- Design and build backend services, APIs, and microservices powering core product functionality
- Own authentication flows, data models, and service-to-service communication patterns
- Architect and implement orchestration systems for multi-step, high-compute pipelines end to end
- Manage GPU cluster scaling and resource allocation to support real-time, high-throughput workloads
- Optimize data movement and model artifact delivery at scale
- Extend internal observability tooling and integrate with Datadog and custom monitoring systems
- Collaborate with ML and infrastructure teams to improve pipeline reliability and latency
- Contribute to infrastructure-as-code and cloud resource management (Kubernetes, ECS, Terraform)
- Drive technical design, code review, and architectural decisions across backend systems
- Mentor engineers and raise the bar on engineering quality and clarity
What They're Looking For
- 3+ years of backend engineering experience building real production systems
- Deep, substantive proficiency in TypeScript, Go, or Python applied to backend services and APIs
- Strong grasp of web fundamentals: HTTP, networking, how browsers and services communicate
- Solid concurrency experience thread safety, resource management, scaling concurrent workloads
- Experience designing and building microservices and service-oriented architectures
- Hands-on experience with REST and/or gRPC service design
- Some exposure to infrastructure orchestration with Kubernetes, ECS, or similar
- Ability to take a high-level design brief and independently drive it to production
- Strong communicator who can clearly articulate trade-offs and gaps in their own systems
- Familiarity with GPU cluster management or ML inference infrastructure
- Experience orchestrating heavy-compute or multi-stage compute pipelines
- Hands-on with Terraform or infrastructure-as-code at scale
- Exposure to Datadog, distributed tracing, or custom observability tooling
- Background in high-throughput, latency-sensitive consumer-scale systems
