Head of Automation Development – 6-Month Contract | £700/day Inside IR35
Location: London-based with monthly office visits (hybrid working)

We’re partnering with a leading organisation undergoing a major connectivity transformation in the UK, seeking a Head of Automation Development to lead and scale their CTO automation development teams. This is a high-impact role, overseeing a team of 30+ developers working across Fixed, Mobile, and B2B networks, driving best practices and delivering high-quality automation solutions at scale.

What you’ll do:

• Lead, recruit, and develop multiple scrum squads of internal and external developers.

• Collaborate with Solution Architects and product teams to design strategic and tactical automation solutions.

• Oversee code quality through review approvals and enforce coding standards and documentation best practices.

• Manage backlog prioritisation, sizing, and allocation of tickets across squads.

• Engage stakeholders internally and externally, including vendors, to ensure alignment and delivery.

• Drive automation across the Plan, Provide, and Assure lifecycle, breaking down silos.

• Mentor teams, encourage data-driven decision making, and deliver continuous improvement.

• Explore and implement new open-source tools and frameworks to enhance automation efficiency.

• Work across both fixed and mobile network domains to create synergies and consolidate automation efforts.

Skills & Experience:

• Extensive senior development leadership experience, ideally within a large telecom or IT organisation.

• Strong knowledge of telecom networks and network transformation projects.

• Proven delivery of high-quality code and experience managing large development teams.

• Hands-on expertise with Netconf, APIs, XML, JSON, Jinja2, Python, and JavaScript.

• Experience with Cisco NSO, Ansible, Netmiko, Docker.

• Familiarity with workflow automation tools such as Itential IAP, Appian, and Resolve.

• Understanding of telecom standards like TMF, Tosca, MEF, and service modelling with YANG/TOSCA.

• Skilled in CI/CD/CT pipelines using GitLab, Robot Framework, Selenium, Cucumber, Veracode, and SonarQube.

Head of Automation Development

About the Role

As Head of Automation Development, you will lead automation development teams across Fixed, Mobile, and B2B networks. You will oversee, scale, and mentor a team of 30+ developers across both internal and external resources, ensuring delivery excellence, code quality, and best practices. You will collaborate with product teams, OSS architecture, and business analysts to maximize value across scaled scrum teams.

Key Accountabilities

• Recruit, develop, and lead multiple development squads across internal and external resources.

• Assess use cases in the backlog, estimate MVP and effort sizing to ensure resources are aligned with required skills.

• Work alongside solution architects to design both tactical and strategic solutions.

• Create workflows and low-level designs when required.

• Review and approve code before merge when necessary.

• Engage with internal and external stakeholders, including vendors.

• Define standards for coding, documentation, and ways of working across 30+ developers.

• Promote closed-loop automation across Plan, Provide, and Assure, eliminating silos.

• Shape development tickets, size tasks, and allocate them to squads.

• Provide regular updates to stakeholders and help them think strategically.

• Explore emerging libraries, open-source tools, and adapters to improve efficiency and outcomes.

• Contribute to the team’s roadmap and strategy.

• Mentor teams and arrange training where needed.

• Foster data-driven decision-making and agile sprint planning.

• Drive synergies and consolidation across fixed and mobile networks.

Experience

• Extensive experience as a senior developer, ideally in a large telecommunications or IT environment.

• Background in network or IT network transformations.

• Proven track record of delivering high-quality code and leading development squads.

Responsibilities

• Develop and deliver: Contribute across the full software development lifecycle, writing clean, tested, maintainable code.

• Experience deploying ML/LLM solutions into production.

• Strong proficiency in Python and modern development stacks.

• Solid understanding of software engineering best practices, CI/CD, testing, DevOps, and SDLC.

• Familiarity with cloud environments and scalable data pipelines.

• Strong communication and collaboration skills; ability to work across teams of engineers and researchers.

• Self-starter with proven ability to drive projects forward without micromanagement.

Preferred Skills & Experience

• Hands-on experience with LLM frameworks (e.g., LangChain, LangGraph) and FastAPI.

• Experience with RAG pipelines and agent-based workflows.

• Knowledge of ModelOps/MLOps principles.

• Familiarity with classical NLP as well as generative AI.
