Founding Research Scientist
London | £60,000 to £75,000 plus equity

This role stands out for its focus on applied research at the intersection of human perception and machine learning, with work directly shaping how intelligent systems understand attention, gaze and behaviour in real world environments. You will have the autonomy to explore ideas end to end, from experimental design to working prototypes, while contributing to technology with clear safety and societal impact.

The Company
They are a human centred research and development consultancy specialising in cognitive and perceptual modelling for complex visual and spatial systems. Operating as a small, fast moving team, they combine academic depth with practical delivery for long term industry partners. The business is profitable, independently funded and intentionally focused on sustainable growth rather than venture backing.

The Role
  • Build and evaluate machine learning models that predict and interpret human attention, gaze and interaction within visual and spatial environments
  • Design and run independent experiments across computer vision, temporal modelling and multimodal data
  • Apply research from cognitive science and perception to practical AI systems
  • Develop prototypes in Python and PyTorch, with light engineering where needed
  • Contribute ideas proactively and collaborate closely within a multidisciplinary team
  • Work on technology aligned with emerging safety and human monitoring requirements across transport and adjacent domains
Your Skills and Experience
  • PhD or equivalent research experience in areas such as computational vision, visual attention, gaze estimation, cognitive neuroscience, HCI or perception with a machine learning component
  • Strong research output through publications, patents or substantial open source contributions, ideally within computer vision or human centred AI
  • Hands on experience with deep learning using Python and PyTorch
  • Ability to design, execute and interpret experiments independently
  • Experience or strong interest in areas such as eye tracking, saliency, egocentric video, EEG with vision, embodied AI or human behaviour modelling
  • Clear communication skills and comfort working in a small, collaborative environment
What They Offer
  • Salary of £60,000 to £75,000 depending on experience
  • Equity options ranging from 0.1 percent to 3.0 percent
  • Predominantly remote working with occasional collaboration in London
  • High impact research work with real world application and long term relevance
  • Opportunity to shape technical direction and grow with the organisation
