The Role

They are looking for an experienced and values-driven Data Governance Lead to shape and oversee our organisation-wide data governance framework. Reporting to senior leadership, you will lead a small, high-performing team and work collaboratively with colleagues across programmes, fundraising, operations, and technology.

This is an exciting opportunity to build strong governance practices that enable safe, ethical, and effective use of data across an international charity environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a clear data governance strategy aligned with organisational goals
  • Lead and mentor a small data governance team, fostering collaboration and continuous improvement
  • Establish data policies, standards, and procedures to improve data quality, consistency, and accessibility
  • Ensure compliance with relevant data protection and privacy regulations across multiple regions
  • Act as the organisation's subject matter expert on data governance and stewardship
  • Partner with stakeholders to promote data literacy and a data-driven culture
  • Oversee data ownership models, metadata management, and data lifecycle practices
  • Identify and mitigate data-related risks
  • Support ethical and responsible use of data in programme delivery and reporting

About You

You are a strategic thinker with strong leadership skills and a passion for using data responsibly to support meaningful impact.

Essential experience and skills:

  • Proven experience in data governance, data management, or information governance roles
  • Experience leading or mentoring a small team
  • Strong understanding of data protection and privacy principles (e.g., GDPR and global equivalents)
  • Ability to translate technical concepts into clear, practical guidance for non-technical stakeholders
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
  • Experience developing policies, frameworks, and governance models

Desirable:

  • Experience working in the charity, NGO, or international development sector
  • Familiarity with cloud-based data environments and modern data platforms
  • Knowledge of data quality, master data management, or data stewardship frameworks
