Ad-Tech and Analytics are In the Game Since social distancing has become the norm, gaming has exploded. Once all the numbers are in, mobile game downloads are expected to see a nearly 40% increase in 2020 from 2019. No business who sees the potential here is standing by, the least of which is advertising. If you remember cable TV or maybe still have one, the free channels were often supported by commercials. In some television shows, products were given strategic placement. Okay, so it’s probably still happening today, but now we’re used to it. Skip ahead a few generations. Hello, Ready Player One fans, and advertisers have a new platform. Or at least, they’re working on it. There are still a few kinks to work out. Some game developers are designing games to help allow advertisers to fit seamlessly into games. The audience of one engagement of TV has moved to a community engagement of many in the gaming world. Over two and half billion people are gamers across demographics of age and location. Social media still has the highest ad buys from television, but gaming is quickly catching up. As advertisers and businesses get in the game, it’s estimated there will be a monumental shift in the collective. Games have always served as a device to teach. Chess and checkers teach strategy. Monopoly teaches business and banking. Life teaches us to follow different paths and see what happens (not so different from Second Life). Since the days of store window displays, the shopping experience has been just that; an experience. So, what happens when you want to recreate the visceral and emotional experience of shopping from within the confines of a computer screen, smartphone, or tablet? Enter Digital and Marketing Analytics. According to a recent report by Adobe, e-commerce sales have seen a 77% jump year-over-year which at any other time in history should have taken 4 to 6 years. The COVID-19 pandemic has helped to escalate and drive these numbers leaving some businesses scrambling and others raking it in. So, what’s the difference? Data professionals. The Role of Data in E-Commerce Whether you buy online and pick up in store or have a product delivered to your door, the role of shopping has irrevocably changed. Ensuring consumers get the personalized experience they’re used to from the days of brick-and-mortar stores, retail stores have turned to Digital and Marketing Analytics to give their customers the shopping experience they’re used to within a different format. Professionals within the UI/UX Design vertical are particularly sought after. Buying habits are changing and competition is fierce. So, how does Data affect e-commerce? Here are 3 examples: Know Your Customer. No longer a lamented visage from yesteryear, knowing your customer is inherent to the survival of an online retailer. Data professionals bring to life the customer through historical data, demographics, and creates products and services which elicit an emotional response to stop, look around, and buy. And if the cart gets abandoned, follow up email campaigns to jog the memory that you were here and were thinking about buying this or that item. Get Personal. Personalize shopping has evolved into the personal shopping experience. What made someone buy a product during their last visit? Dynamic presentation and emotion-driven verbiage can certainly contribute. When an online retailer knows what the buyer wants or needs and presents it in a way that resonates. This is the personalization once the domain of sales clerks. Bridging the old personalization with the new is the key ingredient for successful online retailers. Sell Where Your Consumers are Buying. If your customers are on Facebook looking for a product or service, sell to them where they’re looking. Though reviews are still important, even more prevalent is the range of social influencers to help buyers make decisions. Enter social commerce. Layout, design, Data gathering, collecting, and analyzing all have a slightly different flavor within this construct. Data Professionals in Demand Within the Digital Analytics and Marketing specialism are a variety of Data professionals in demand as retailers are forced online. Businesses need E-Commerce Analysts to help present the new normal for the online retailer. As buy online and pick up in store convenience increases as well as purchases made from devices such as your smartphone, there’s been a rise in demand for Web & Mobile Product Management as well. Digital Transformation is no longer at the doorstep of business, it has crossed the threshold. And rather than focus on one tool or another, the impetus is on the importance of having more than one tool at a candidate’s disposal. What candidates want has changed and evolved as well. In the movie Definitely, Maybe starring Ryan Reynolds, there’s a scene in which he must sell tables for a political campaign dinner fundraiser. He makes call after call with no luck. Finally, in frustration, he speaks plainly and finds a connection between the politician and the prospective donor. In an instant, he understands. Make the connection and you can’t go wrong. This is the 90’s version of micro-targeting. Online advertising today has honed targeted Marketing to an art form and it’s infused every industry from Fisherman’s Wharf to Wall Street to Washington. Messages are crafted on detailed profiles of what makes us unique such as hopes, fears, dreams, emotional triggers, and more which is then taken out of the hands of humans. Enter such deep, personal details into automated technologies and you’ll get automated reactions. How did we get here? Ever since Cicero’s brother, Quintus, who approached politics with a do anything to win mindset, we’ve been working toward this point. But, when it comes to technological advances within politics, George Simmel put it best when he wrote around 1915, “the vast intensive and extensive growth of our technology…entangles us in a web of means, and means toward means, more and more intermediate stages, causing us to lose sight of our real ultimate ends.” What does this mean? It means we have moved so quickly and with such intensity as we push inwards while reaching outward, we get tangled up in our own systems. Before we know it, it’s difficult to separate the means from their ends, and we lose sight of our purpose. In other words, it can be hard to keep our sense of direction with our constant distraction of tasks, systems, and processes. According to Simmel, this would soon morph into what he called a ‘fragmentary character.’ Like a mosaic, we put the pieces back together and assemble the bits to fit our concept of the world. The Digitizing of Campaigns Traditional campaigning has traditionally looked much like the movie scene mentioned above with phone banks, whiteboards, and handmade signs. But, today, things are changing. Everyone has at least one smart device which can sync information in real time to a range of devices. Algorithms and predictive modeling help reduce the guesswork, though gut feeling and instinct still prevail. At least, for now. Our machines are learning how to learn about us and define what we believe and wish to see by historical Data, or rather our past behaviors. Where psychographic profiling meets micro-targeting. What was once only seen in the Marketing world has now entered politics. Just like marketers want to know what people are interested in, so to do politicians wish to know what voters think. To do this, both industries will study behavioral and attitudinal profiles to help understand a demographic better or discern a gap in the marketplace. In consumer research, companies rely on psychographic micro-targeting to reach smaller groups and individuals. The key question here is to ask is to what extent are politicians prepared to pass laws that restrict their own opportunities to know more about voters. Just as the next generation of voters are coming, so too are the next generation of tools being developed. One Final Thought… Over the last 20 years or so, we have built an immense Data structure from mobile devices to social media to modelling processes and more. With this kind of connectivity combined with fragmentary media, the use of Data Analysis has a big role to play going forward. If we seek change in our political and social infrastructures, we will have to reimagine the structures currently in place. From algorithmic modelling to AI and Machine Learning, the possibilities for new ideologies has emerged blurring the lines between context and production in which Data underpins capitalism. As those in Data Analytics continue to pursue an uninterrupted (read: non-fragmentary) vision of the world, we find ourselves at a new stage in history of where both looking back and looking forward at the same time informs our future. The days of generically using Data in Marketing are on the decline as information gathering becomes more laser focused. Once the domain of third-party sites looking to build partnerships and boost campaign efforts, Data Management Platforms (DMPs) are making way for Customer Data Platforms (CDPs). Under the weight of data breaches, GDPR, and other security issues, technologies that center around consent are helping build consumers into campaign strategies. This is a reversal from older strategies to build data from historic data profiles at channel level. Data is Data, So What’s the Difference? In a nutshell, DMPs act as “equalizers” – all companies have access to predefined parameters of data. CDPs are “differentiators” – each customer is unique with information driven from first-party historical and contextual data, determined along the customer’s purchase journey. Tailored customer data has now gone beyond the scope of Data Management Platforms and offers marketing insights nearly unheard of just a few years ago. Now, we can understand our customers not only from their historical, factual, and contextual data within parameters we’ve created, but we can gain an outside perspective as well. Five Reasons CDPs are on the Rise Single, Unified StorageThey store ALL data (1st, 2nd, and 3rd) such as names, addresses, emails, etc. as well as cookie IDs and tags. This storage capacity makes it easy to aggregate everything into one place and integrate with advertising systems.They capture data at a granular level. This includes considering long-term storage and multiple storage formats without predefined parameters focused only on advertising – what we want to sell you, not what do you want to buy?They aren’t restricted to stages of the customer journey, but can pick up data anywhere along the customer lifecycle. This information can be used for look-alike modeling or can be retargeted for more effective advertising and marketing efforts.They create a holistic overview of customer behaviors opening up new opportunities for personalization. Customer First Brand Targeting Today’s advertising and marketing strategies are being re-evaluated to prioritize the customer experience. Once customer data had to fit into predefined boxes of information, now our data collection efforts are as unique as every person who visits your website, clicks a call-to-action, or visits a brick-and-mortar store. In a Nutshell… This is a crucial time in the industry and any door which will help us resolve issues and keep the customer front and center will strengthen our efforts. However, as we go deeper into what the customer likes and why we must keep our customer’s privacy safe whilst retaining an advantage over our competitors. DMPs, once the singular domain of marketers, was used to package and repackage data to better understand customers and improve ad targeting. CDPs, on the other hand, focus on every aspect, every angle of marketing to make advertising more customer-centric and laser-focused. Ultimately, as CDPs are all inclusive, they have absorbed Data Management Platforms into their systems, helping move the industry another step forward. With Linkedin being full of ‘recruitment bashing’ and many backing the extinction of recruiters because of the latest advancements in AI and Machine Learning I thought I’d share why a computer can never replace the human interaction and emotional intelligence that good recruiters can bring to the table.Note the term ‘good recruiters’. Quite important to this article. Recruitment is a highly populated, saturated market whereby anybody with the access to a phone and laptop can ultimately become a recruiter or start a recruitment business. As someone utilizing the services of a recruiter, it is in your best interest to be stringent and identify those that fall under the ‘good recruiter’ bracket. Be selective over who you work with and build fewer relationships but with those market experts that know your relevant industry inside out. You will find that both your opinion and customer experience will improve significantly.Numerous companies have been emerging that focus on eliminating the process of the recruiter. Many modelled on a platform basis connecting direct employers with potential employees. Using data science models and machine learning to automate interview processes and create a better ‘match’ between hiring partners and candidates with the view to eradicate human error. Thus, removing the need for a recruiter.Guess what? Recruitment becoming extinct isn’t a new topic. In the 90s job boards were introduced and everybody thought that was going to remove the need for the recruitment industry. Wrong. Recruitment evolved. Then Linkedin becomes a platform with the potential to connect everybody worldwide on a professional basis. Again, the same trumpet blown. Why would you need a recruiter? And again, recruitment survives. It just evolves.A robot cannot develop personal relationships with you, become a friend rather than a recruiter, go for a beer, become a trusted partner that you value, demonstrate emotional intelligence, carry out salary negotiations on your behalf or selectively filter certain information (Yes, I said that), not because it is unethical or trying to scam you but because it is in the best interest for both parties to come to an agreement. Full knowledge isn’t always best. Would you want to know everything that your partner said about you to their friends? Probably not. Furthermore, when hiring most will agree that 50% is based on technical capability and skill set, the remaining 50% on cultural fit, work ethic, attitude etc. A machine cannot assess an individual’s ability to fit in with a team. The humanized touch is something that cannot be replicated or replaced.Features on the left-hand side of that comparison sheet are vital during any job search.A couple of interesting conversations this week. One where a senior level candidate (C-level) believed that an ATS (Applicant Tracking System) had some form of algorithm in place to automatically review a resume and assess suitability for a job. Now, there may be an ATS out there capable of doing this but I have never used one. In the three recruitment companies I have worked with, every consultant has personally reviewed every resume that is submitted in relation to a job. Granted, reviewing each resume only takes around 30 seconds of my time but that’s because I know my market inside out and know exactly what clients are looking for. The second conversation was around robots conducting brain surgery. A robot is now capable of carrying out an operation that takes a surgeon 2 hours in 2.5 minutes which sparked some research on my side. That research led to me finding out that there were 144 deaths during robot-assisted surgery, 1,391 injuries, and 8,061 counts of device malfunctions between 2000- 2013. The question posed here is around human error vs computer malfunction. Sure, that was four years ago and technology has advanced since then but personally I would opt for a brain surgeon carrying out my operation any day.I like to relate things back to dating as it’s always a hot topic in the US. Let’s look at Tinder as an example – an algorithm based app ultimately matching you with your future husband (or hook up). Yet, most people that I ask about dating apps would always say the same thing – “I’d much rather meet a guy (or girl) in a bar.” Why? Because the initial chemistry stimulated from human interaction is far greater than that achieved by an algorithm.Advancement in technology isn’t always a good thing. The modern world for humans is about adaptation and evolution. The recruitment industry will not become extinct but it will evolve into a different model than its current state.You always trust your friends to do best by you. Build friendships with recruiters that know and understand your market and in turn this will develop strong business relationships when the time comes that you need their services.
