The litany of past jobs, education, and business goals has and is quickly becoming a thing of the past. With millions out of work, the rise of remote working, and the continued high demand for those in the Data industry field, CVs today must be much more dynamic. And, for the innovative Data Scientist, there are plenty of ways to stand out from the crowd. If you’re interested in working in Data First environments, why not use the idea to inform your job search? Consider this. When you begin your search, you’re using many of the same tactics you’d use in any role – assess, analyse, gather, improve, and control. Want to Make a Career Change? Assess the Situation. While more Data professionals are staying in their roles longer than in previous years, there do come times when it’s time to make a change. Maybe you want to get a fresh start somewhere for more creative expression. Maybe you want to be a strong leader who wears a variety of hats, but you’re dug in to your current role. So, what do you do? If you’re on the fence, you assess the situation. Here are a few steps you might follow: Review your CV – with which business processes and technical systems do you have experience? Determine which roles interest you and why – do you need more education, a new skill, or does the company you’re interested in offer on the job training, upskilling, or reskilling?Research the role you’re interested in – your desired outcome - and breakdown any challenges into actionable efforts you can make to get the job.Gather as much Data as possible to not only help with any adjustments to your CV, but to include in your cover letter. Remember, what was once on paper and emailed or delivered can now be done by video. After all, your next goal is likely a Zoom interview. Maybe you’ve gone a bit further and created a mind map of your goals, experiences, and processes. If so, you’ve got the beginnings of your job search model. Putting Your Job Search into Action to Improve Your Chances You’ve gotten much of the preparatory legwork done. Now, it’s time to get things moving and test the market. Perhaps you’ve got a spreadsheet or are keeping a journal of companies you’d like to work or roles you’d like to take on. You’ve researched their website pages, gotten the hiring managers information, and have crafted your cover letter and CV to fit the job you’re most interested in. Have you sent out your information or made connections in your field? Are you getting a good response or only a trickle? This is the improvement phase. This is where you tweak things. How? Have a friend or recruiter review your CV – are their typos? Do you meet the right qualifications? Are you over or under-qualified? Is there anything they think you could add which might help? Did you follow the application instructions correctly? Did they request a video resume and you sent them paper or vice versa?Have you addressed any feedback you’ve received from hiring managers, recruiters, friends, or colleagues? When you figure out where and what to improve, you can move forward more proactively. Many businesses want a professional who can address issues specific to a project or difficult situation. Determine what needs to change and fix it with an eye toward improving the process in the future. Taking Control of Your Job Search Looking for a job can often feel like the employers have all the power, but that’s not necessarily the case. Computer Vision is one of the fastest growing markets in Data & Analytics. While it was on a trajectory prior to the pandemic, the needs we have now have amped up the role Computer Vision plays in our day-to-day lives and businesses who want to keep up or get ahead are paying attention. Unexpected Businesses Using Computer Vision Some unusual players leaning on these technologies are grocery stores. While some have pivoted to pickup and delivery, others have remained stagnant with yesterday’s shopping habits changed only to individuals in store wearing masks. For those who made the leap to the "new normal", they’re using things like shelf sensors and Machine Learning to automate ordering and determine best placement of a product. We recently spoke Nisha Iyer, Head of Data Science, and Nupur Neti, a Data Scientist from Data Society. Founded in 2014, Data Society consult and offer tailored Data Science training for businesses and organisations across the US. With an adaptable back-end model, they create training programs that are not only tailored when it comes to content, but also incorporate a company’s own Data to create real-life situations to work with. However, recently they’ve been looking into another area: toilet paper. Following mass, ill-informed, stock-piling as countries began to go into lockdown, toilet paper became one of a number of items that were suddenly unavailable. And, with a global pandemic declared, Data Society were one of a number of Data Science organisations who were looking to help anyway they could. “When this Pandemic hit, we began thinking how could we help?” says Iyer. “There’s a lot of ways Data Scientists could get involved with this but our first thought was about how people were freaking out about toilet paper. That was the base of how we started, as kind of a joke. But then we realised we already had an app in place that could help.” The app in question began life as a project for the World Central Kitchen (WCK), a non-profit who help support communities after natural disasters occur. With the need to go out and get nutritionally viable supplies upon arriving at a new location, WCK teams needed to know which local grocery stores had the most stock available. “We were working with World Central Kitchen as a side project. What we built was an app that supposed to help locate resources during disasters. So we already had the base done.” The app in question allows the user to select their location and the products they are after. It then provides information on where you can get each item, and what their nutritional values are, with the aim of improving turnaround time for volunteers. One of the original Data Scientists, Nupur Neti, explained how they built the platform: “We used a combination of R and Python to build the back-end processing and R Shiny to build the web application. We also included Google APIs that took your location and could find the closest store to you. Then, once you have the product and the sizes, we had an internal ranking algorithm which could rank the products selected based on optimisation, originally were based on nutritional value.” The team figured that the same technology could help in the current situation, ranking based on stock levels rather than nutritional value. With an updated app, Iyer notes “People won’t have to go miles and stand in lines where they are not socially distancing. They’ll know to visit a local grocery store that does have what they need in stock, that they’ve probably not even thought of before.” However, creating an updated version presented its own challenges. Whereas the WCK app utilised static Data, this version has to rely on real-time Data. Unfortunately this isn’t as easy to come by, as Iyer knows too well: “When we were building this for the nutrition app we reached out to groceries stores and got some responses for static Data. Now, we know there is real-time Data on stock levels because they’re scanning products in and out. Where is that inventory though? We don’t know.” After putting an article out asking for help finding live Data, crowdsourcing app OurStreets got in touch. They, like Data Society, were looking to help people find groceries in short supply. But, with a robust front and back-end in place, the app already live, and submissions flying in across the States, they were looking for a Data Science team who could make something of their findings. “We have the opportunity,” says Iyer “to take the conceptual ideas behind our app and work with OurStreets robust framework to create a tool that could be used nationwide.” Before visiting a store, app users select what they are looking for. This allows them to check off what the store has against their expectations, as well as uploading a picture of what is available. They can also report on whether the store is effectively practising social distancing. Neti explains, that this Data holds lots of possibilities for their Data Science team: “Once we take their Data, our system will clean any submitted text using NLP and utilise image recognition on submitted pictures using Deep Learning. This quality Data, paired with the Social Distancing information, will allow us to gain better insights into how and what people are shopping for. We’ll then be able to look at trends, see what people are shopping for and where. Ultimately, it will also allow us to make recommendations as to where people should then go if they are looking for a product.” In addition to crowdsourced information, Data Society are still keen to get their hands on any real-time Data that supermarkets have to offer. Outside of their current projects, Iyer remains optimistic for the world when it emerges from the current situation: “Things will return to normal. As dark a time as this is, I think it’s going to exemplify why people need to use Artificial Intelligence and Data Science more. If this type of app is publicised during the Coronavirus, maybe more people will understand the power of what Data and Data Science can do and more companies that are slow adaptors will see this and see how it could be helpful to their industry.” If you want to make the world a better place using Data, we may have a role for you, including a number of remote opportunities. Faced with a rapidly expanding and increasingly older population, Healthcare resources in both the UK and US are facing an unprecedented level of demand. With only limited resource available, conversation is beginning to turn to the potential use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to ease some of the strain. A recent example already seeing success is the current collaboration between Google’s DeepMind and London’s Moorfields Eye Hospital. But, as the lines begin to blur between human and machine-diagnosis, it’s worth questioning what role AI should actually play. SEEING THE POTENTIAL IN AI Aside from the increase in population, there are many societal elements that are affecting the healthcare system. An increase in illnesses such as diabetes has led to a rise in eye-diseases and increased demand on optometrists. Fortunately, AI can speed up the process with new technologies allowing systems like DeepMind to make their own diagnosis. Optical Coherence Technology (OCT) allows optometrists to create a 3D scans of people’s eyes. By bouncing near-infrared light of the interior surfaces of the eye, it can create an image that will reveal any abnormalities. DeepMind has been trained on over 15,000 scans and can now form a likely diagnosis, having used algorithms to find common patterns within the data. Head of DeepMind, Mustafa Suleyman, says: “ [This could] transform the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with sight threatening eye conditions [...] around the world.” However, with an accuracy of just over 94%, there is still enough room for error to cause concern, especially given the potential consequences of an incorrect diagnosis. LOOKING FOR MISTAKES This doesn’t mean we should rule out the use of AI altogether. Whilst we may not be able to solely rely on the technology for diagnosis, it can be effective when working hand-in-hand with a human skillset. In particular, by using AI systems for Triage purposes (determining what order patients should be seen in), as opposed to making a full diagnosis, patients demonstrating more significant symptoms could be reported and seen by a medical professional as priority, potentially leading to a higher chance of recovery. When AI is used as a driver for patient management, as opposed to being viewed as alternative physician, it can create a faster and more efficient process. To help continue to improve the results produced by DeepMind, the NHS have been given a validated version to use for free for the next five years. Using real-world applications over this time should streamline both their processes, and the technology itself. A LONG TERM VISION For the time being, AI’s role within Eye Health is one of evolution, not revolution. With the inconsistency of current technology and the impact of incorrect results on people’s sight, it can only be utilised as a supporting tool. For now, the skillsets of Data Analysts and medical doctors remain too separate to full work hand-in-hand. Add to this the risks of automation bias (a willingness to blindly trust a machine’s output), and the margin of error is too high. However, that’s not to say that AI can’t and won’t play a significant part in the future of Healthcare. With the technology to detect eye conditions through the lens of your smartphone camera closer than ever to mainstream use, AI is set to play a huge role in outpatient treatment. There is a fundamental shift happening in the analytics space at the moment, one which is seeing the rise of open-source software staking its claim on the sector. More frequently we at Harnham are seeing companies of all sizes introducing open-source software such as R, Python and Hadoop. Moving away from the traditional analytics tools of the past – most notably, SAS. This dramatic shift is something which has been comfortably reinforced at the EARL conference 2015. Back by popular demand, it hosts a number of key figures in the analytics space to showcase the latest trends and topics in R. Over the past decade R programming has arguably become the most important tool for statistical analysis, data visualisation and predictive modelling, used by statisticians and data scientists to name a few, in both academia and the commercial world. The Benefit of Being OpenSo why is R so great? Well first of all, being open-source, it’s FREE – anyone can use it. Who doesn't like stuff that comes for free? After this, you also have a robust tool that can manage any statistical task whilst providing the ability to deliver high quality visualisations. Something nicely illustrated by Joe Cheng’s presentation on the increasingly popular applications of Rshiny. On top of this, once you know how to, it’s easy to use R, and gives fast results. Romain Francois and Dirk Eddelbuettel’s ‘Rccp’ package is a perfect example of this, and has become the most widely used R package. Seamlessly combining the power of C++ and an easy to approach API that lets you write high-performance code it’s easy to see why. Finally (and probably most importantly) its open-source nature means it becomes a collaborative effort to constantly find ways to improve its use, keeping the tool ahead of the game. With over 2 million users worldwide experimenting, finding bugs and working together as a community. R manages to stay at the forefront of its field. A tool of this nature has thrived as well as similar projects, such as Linux and MySQL; in culture; which has collaboration/brainstorming and sharing information as the key to its continued furtherance and enrichment. One Step Ahead of the Competition Combine these factors, and you can see why R has become one of – if not the – most popular analytics software tools right now. Both companies and universities alike are jumping on the bandwagon, meaning that more and more analysts are coming into the field having added R to their toolbox. What occurs is a snowball effect, sustaining the continued rise of R. With R thriving it places a huge pressure on others to keep up – can they adapt or will they soon come to play little, if any, part in the analytics space in years’ to come? Whilst there was little talk at the EARL Conference about R’s biggest competitor, it became clear that the battle beginning to take shape, potentially for the years to come is between R and Python. Who will win the fight to become the data scientist’s language of choice? Despite all the talk it is obvious to see that there are pros and cons to both, and use cases whereby one would be more effective than the other. Therefore is it really a war? Or, is the outcome more likely a co-existence?

Data science is a young discipline, a multidisciplinary field requiring knowledge in sophisticated statistical modeling and software engineering. A strong grasp of information design doesn’t hurt, either. As a result, skilled practitioners are in high demand as increasingly data-driven enterprises and organizations in need of a unique skillset capable of reaping insights from big data. Meanwhile, there remains some confusion and debate as to what makes a data scientist.The future of the discipline is bright, but it’s useful to look to its past to understand what it is and where it may be going. Data science arose from the convergence of two more mature disciplines. In a new post at Forbes, Gil Press presents a short history of how the discipline came to be, tracing its evolution back to a 1962 paper by mathematician John W. Tukey, “The Future of Data Analysis“. In Peter Naur’s 1974 book Concise Survey of Computer Methods, the computer scientist offered an early definition of data science, as “The science of dealing with data, once they have been established, while the relation of the data to what they represent is delegated to other fields and sciences.”Beginning in the mid-’90s, the discussion leapt out of academic circles and turned towards potential business applications, with the advent of data mining technologies and their potential application in marketing and business intelligence. These developments also prompted the now-familiar challenge of storing and working with millions of rows of data. In 1999, Jacob Zahavi articulated this emerging issue, stating, “Scalability is a huge issue in data mining. Another technical challenge is developing models that can do a better job analyzing data, detecting non-linear relationships and interaction between elements… Special data mining tools may have to be developed to address web-site decisions.”Data science came into its own during the last decade. As the strands of mathematics and computer science continued to intertwine in academia, new technologies were developed to mine, store, and analyze these massive data sets, while consumer internet giants such as Google demonstrated the business value of a data-driven approach to operations and innovation. A 2009 prediction by Google’s Chief Economist Hal Varian was particularly spot-on, with Varian telling McKinsey Quarterly, “I keep saying the sexy job in the next ten years will be statisticians…the ability to take data—to be able to understand it, to process it, to extract value from it, to visualize it, to communicate it—that’s going to be a hugely important skill in the next decades.”Four years later, this statement seems like a forgone conclusion, as big data has reached buzzword status in the media, and become fundamental to the operations of enterprise, academic, and government organizations. Awareness of the value of data science has leapt out of academia and the business world and into mass culture, largely thanks to the accuracy of Nate Silver’s projections during the 2012 elections and his bestselling book The Signal and the Noise. French company Spotter has developed an analytics tool that claims to be able to identify sarcastic comments posted online. Spotter says its clients include the Home Office, EU Commission and Dubai Courts. The algorithm-based analytics software generates reputation reports based on social and traditional media material. However some experts say such tools are often inadequate because of the nuance of language. A spokeswoman for the Home Office said she should not comment at this time. Spotter's UK sales director Richard May said the company monitored material that was "publicly available". Its proprietary software uses a combination of linguistics, semantics and heuristics to create algorithms that generate reports about online reputation. It says it is able to identify sentiment with up to an 80% accuracy rate. The company says these reports can also be verified by human analysts if the client wishes. Algorithms had been developed to reflect various tones in 29 different languages including Chinese, Russian and Arabic, said Mr May. "Nothing is fool-proof - we are talking about automated systems," he told the BBC. "But five years ago you couldn't get this level of accuracy - we were at the 50% mark." Mr May added one of the most common subjects for sarcasm was bad service - such as delayed journeys. "One of our clients is Air France. If someone has a delayed flight, they will tweet, 'Thanks Air France for getting us into London two hours late' - obviously they are not actually thanking them," he said. "We also have to be very specific to specific industries. The word 'virus' is usually negative. But if you're talking about virus in the context of the medical industry, it might not be." Spotter charged a minimum of £1,000 per month for its services, Mr May said. Human effort Simon Collister, who lectures in PR and social media at the London College of Communication, told the BBC there was "no magic bullet" when it came to analytics that recognize tone. "These tools are often next to useless - in terms of understanding tone, sarcasm, it's so dependent on context and human languages," he said. "It's social media and what makes it interesting and fascinating is the social side - machines just can't comprehend that side of things in my opinion." Mr Collister added that human interpretation was still vital. "The challenge that governments and businesses have is whether to rely on automated tools that are not that effective or to engage a huge amount of human effort."
