Award-winning online retailer is looking for a Head of Insight to join their growing insight team. This company is growing fast with the aim of tripling its size over the coming years, and they're looking for a driven and passionate Head of Insight to spearhead this growth.


The company is an award-winning online retailer in the midst of a massive period of growth. The company has enjoyed significant success and expansion in the last few years and has done this through fresh ideas, enthusiasm, drive, and ambition. They are looking to build on this through the use of data and marketing insight, which the Head of Insight will be responsible for.


The Head of Insight will be in charge of the Insight team that is made up of skilled analysts working on various analytical challenges from understanding the drivers of trading performance to evaluating marketing channels and campaigns. The Head of Insight will ensure the highest quality of output from the insight team and will work closely with senior stakeholders to deliver roadmaps of insight projects to drive customer growth.

Specifically, the Head of Insight will be responsible for:

  • Develop in-depth knowledge of our customers, our business, and our data, enabling the Insight team to reliably inform stakeholder decision-making across the business.
  • Deliver an insight backlog of analytical items consisting of both questions asked by senior stakeholders and areas of analysis proactively identified by the Insight team to achieve shared commercial goals.
  • Conduct ad-hoc deep dive analysis into the performance of marketing channel performance, new marketing content, website experiences and customer behaviour and recommend ways in which we can improve performance to support day-to-day and strategic decision making.
  • Identify and quantify UX opportunities, assist in the experiment design and delivery of an A/B testing roadmap and measurement framework, and provide statistical analysis of results to continually improve website performance.
  • Oversee the implementation of all website tracking and testing technologies, including Google Analytics and GTM, Monetate, survey tools, etc, to ensure all data capture is sufficiently detailed, accurate and reliable.
  • Work closely with marketing and external partners to understand how marketing campaigns & tactics and product range decisions have been reflected in, and impacted website performance.


The ideal Head of Insight will have the following skills and experience:

  • Demonstrable experience in senior analytical roles with direct line management of a multi-disciplinary analytical team. Ideally gained in a retail, ecommerce or consumer facing business.
  • A clear and concise communicator who enjoys building relationships, takes prides in collaborating effectively with colleagues, and is accustomed to working closely with and presenting to senior stakeholders.
  • Proven experience using a range of quantitative and qualitative analytical techniques and blending information from multiple sources to deliver clear, actionable insight across a range of functional areas.
  • A tenacious problem solver with a passion for quickly responding to business questions, defining and leading multiple threads of analysis and providing clear and simple insights to help business decision makers choose the right path
  • Demonstrable knowledge of website/ ecommerce and digital marketing technologies and the opportunities and limitations of data collection methods that underpin these areas.
  • Experience managing directly or overseeing the delivery web analytics implementation projects and using web analytics reports, data and insights (Google Analytics or similar)
  • Highly proficient in use of SQL, Excel/ Google Sheets, and data visualisation and reporting tools (Tableau, Looker) for data analysis.
  • Experience using Python or R for data analysis is highly desirable, an understanding of how these are used is essential. This role will be a mix of hands-on analysis, leading and coaching analysts working with, primarily, SQL, Python and R.
  • Numerate degree, marketing or business studies with significant focus on data, measurement and statistical analysis is desirable


The successful Head of Insight will receive a salary of up to £70,000 based upon experience. As well as this the successful candidate will have great flexible working options and a vibrant, exciting work culture.

National Storytelling Week: Telling A Story Through Data

A story is a lot more than just words on a page. It’s a combination of interesting language, images, colour and, perhaps most importantly, a brilliant narrator.  This is no different in Data Analytics. Like any story, the beginning of any data report starts out as numbers and figures on a page which, let’s face it, isn’t the most interesting read. To ensure the data reaches its full potential and entices an engaged audience, a good Data Analyst will wind and weave them into a compelling story.  So, how might you go about doing this? Know your audience How your story is crafted will be completely dependent on who will be reading it. It’s important to consider your audience’s age, knowledge and expertise. For example, if you were reporting to a junior team, the information given will be simplified, and specific language and jargon should be broken down to include explanations, making the data accessible. The story may also be a lot longer than usual to ensure all areas of information are covered, with room for questions if need be. This is crucial if you want your data, and your story, to benefit the learning and development of the team as well as to encourage their interest and curiosity in the topic.  On the other hand, if you were telling your data story to a group of expert professionals, the explanations will be a lot more top line and the story much pithier and succinct. The depth should instead lie in the narrative of how the data impacts them and their company, providing solutions to problems or providing compelling ideas for innovation and change.  Choose an engaging narrative Undoubtedly, your data will have thrown up all sorts of storylines, from the mundane to the thrilling. When you’re creating your presentation or report, if the data is relevant, opt to design your story around the most exciting dataset. Your aim is to keep your audience engaged and wanting to know more, not to bore them with too many, or figures that are not relevant or provide further guidance.  Be creative No matter how electrifying your data may be, there's only so much information an individual can take in. Your story needs visuals to bring what you are reporting on to life. Typography, font and font size, colour, images, graphs and tables are all valuable assets to include to help stimulate your audience’s imagination.  Of course, in this day and age, these visuals don’t have to be limited to static pictures either. Don’t be afraid to play around with movement and interactivity to get your audience involved and engaged. That being said, it’s important to find a good balance of static and interactive. Be an appealing narrator If you’re having to present your data, you’ve got an extra challenge on your plate. Your story is only as good as you are. No matter how visually fantastic your report is, or how apt it is for your audience, if you are bored, unengaged and uninterested by the information you are presenting, you will pass all these feelings onto your audience.  Not only is it important you know the story you’re telling inside out, but you should be excited by the data you are presenting. Don’t be afraid to inject personality into your data, make it characteristic and make it feel human. If you are passionate about your data and your story, then your audience will be too.  Data doesn’t just have to be statistics on a page. It can be thrilling, it can be colourful, it can be loud, and it can be enticing. Only about 10-15% of businesses do this.  - Businesses need to understand their customers now more than ever, and a strong CRM is a great foundation for this.  - Because the Location Intelligence space is set to grow rapidly, businesses will be looking for more and more insight from specialists in this field.  - There is lots of great Open Source Data available for free. Geoawesomeness provide lots of learning and free materials.
