Contract Data Engineer - Legal Data & Document Processing

A leading law firm is seeking an experienced Data Engineer to join the firm on a contract basis, supporting initiatives focused on large-scale text data, document parsing, and unstructured data processing. This role will work closely with legal, data, and technology teams to build and maintain data pipelines that enable efficient analysis of complex legal documents.

The Role

The Data Engineer will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining data solutions that handle high volumes of unstructured and semi-structured text data. The role requires strong technical expertise combined with an understanding of document-heavy environments, ideally within legal or professional services contexts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Designing and maintaining data pipelines for processing large volumes of unstructured text data
  • Building solutions for document ingestion, parsing, and transformation (e.g. contracts, pleadings, correspondence)
  • Supporting document classification, metadata extraction, and text enrichment workflows
  • Integrating data from document management systems and other internal sources
  • Ensuring data quality, reliability, and performance across pipelines
  • Collaborating with legal teams, analysts, and engineers to deliver data-driven solutions
  • Supporting ad hoc data investigations and technical problem-solving

Required Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience as a Data Engineer, ideally in a document-heavy or text-focused environment
  • Strong experience working with unstructured and semi-structured data
  • Experience with document parsing, text processing, or data extraction techniques
  • Proficiency in relevant programming languages (e.g. Python, SQL)
  • Experience building and maintaining scalable data pipelines
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently on a contract basis

Desirable Experience

  • Exposure to legal data, law firms, or professional services environments
  • Experience with NLP, OCR, or text analytics tools
  • Familiarity with cloud-based data platforms and storage solutions
